How to Pronounce Reliable and Reliability

How to improve English pronunciation: In this episode of Word of the Week, I will show you how to pronounce reliable and its noun form, reliability. If something is reliable, then it is describing a subject as trustworthy, consistently good and of high quality. Reliability is the quality of being trustworthy, consistently good and of high quality.

Hi, my name's Melanie Hussell and today's word of the week is a word family, reliable, the adjective and reliability, the noun. Let's start with reliable, the adjective. How many syllables? Re, li, a, ble. Four syllables. Now let's look at the sounds in those syllables. First syllable. (R) re,. i- short vowel second syllable. Le, (I) eye long vowel. Third syllable, uh, weak unstressed vowel. Fourth syllable b-,. uh, l. Ble. Now let's put this together. Reliable. Reliable. Where is the stress in this word? Re-li-a-ble. It's on the second syllable, reliable, reliable. 

Now let's have a look at the noun, reliability. Let's have a look. How many syllables there are in this word? Re - li -a -  bil - i - ty. Six syllables. Now let's have a look at the sounds in those six syllables. First syllable, re - i, re, second syllable, le - eye. li. Third syllable, uh. Fourth syllable, b - i - l, bil. Fifth syllable uh, again, unstressed short vowel. Six syllable, t - ee, long vowel, tee. Now let's put those together reliability. Here are my six fingers. Re - li - a -bil - i - ty. Where is the stress Re - li - a -bil - i - ty? Yes, it's on the fourth syllable, bil, reliability. 

Now let's put those together in two sample sentences. I am proud to say we have a reliable workforce. The reliability of our systems is critical IT.
