How to Pronounce 'Drought'

How to improve English pronunciation: In this episode of Word of the Week, I will go over how to pronounce the word Drought. Drought is a word used to describe a prolonged period of abnormally low rainfall, often leading to a shortage of water. 

Pronouncing drought can be tricky as the spelling “OUGH” is pronounced seven different ways in the English Language. Yes! The pronunciation of English vowels can be a challenge. In this video, you will learn how to pronounce drought, what are the sounds in each syllable, and how to use drought in a sentence. 

Not only is knowing how to pronounce English words correctly empowering, but it also means your listeners understand you first time and they can focus on your messages and not on understanding your words. Accent reduction is not necessary, but clarity of your speech is.

One of you contacted me and asked me, Melanie, how do you pronounce drought? Yes indeed. You're right. The spelling O U G H in English is pronounced seven different ways.

Let me help you with this one, drought. Yes. Just one syllable. Now let's look at the sounds in this word, (d) de, (r) ra, ow. Long vowel, like in now. Ow - t, If you put these two together, it's out... out now, all the sounds together, drought, drought. Now let's put this together into a sample sentence. Scientists confirmed that things are bad now, but worse droughts are coming.
